First Edition of Winston Churchill's Europe Unite; Inscribed by Him
First edition of this collection of speeches from Churchill. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Donald Wolfit from Winston S. Churchill." The recipient, Donald Wolfit was an English actor-manager, known for his touring wartime productions of Shakespeare, even performing during air raids. He was inspired by Churchill, who understood literature's capacity to provide moral and patriotic guidance. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1950 for his services to the theatre, and knighted in 1957. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing.
During his fifty-year political career, Winston S. Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph. One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist.
