First British edition of James' classic biographical study of his great predecessor Nathaniel Hawthorne. Octavo, original scarlet cloth. In very good condition with light rubbing. Edited by John Morley.
James shared his predecessor Hawthorne's interest in moral quandaries, divided loyalties, and the conflict between his protagonists' experiences of life and objective reality. James' ranking of Hawthorne's novels has been generally accepted by later critics and Hawthorne's influence on his work became increasingly pronounced throughout his career.
