Known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb", Hungarian-American theoretical physicist Edward Teller made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics, spectroscopy, and surface physics. His enduring legacy lies in his pivotal role in the development and advocacy of thermonuclear weapons during the Cold War. A refugee from fascist Europe, he joined the Manhattan Project and later became a leading figure at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he promoted an aggressive nuclear strategy and championed programs such as missile defense. Teller’s outspoken support for weapons development, coupled with his testimony against J. Robert Oppenheimer during the 1954 security hearings, made him a deeply divisive figure in the scientific community.
