Bartolomé Bossi (1817–1882) was an Italian-born mariner, journalist, painter, and explorer who played a significant role in the documentation and exploration of South America during the 19th century. After emigrating to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1832, he became involved in both merchant and military naval activities, including serving alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi. Bossi conducted extensive explorations, notably leading an expedition through the Mato Grosso region of Brazil, where he documented indigenous communities and geographical features. His works, including Viagem Pitoresca pelos Rios Paraná, Paraguai, São Lourenço, Cuiabá e o Arinos, provide valuable insights into the natural and cultural landscapes of South America. Additionally, his involvement with the steamship Charrúa during the War of the Pacific highlights his contributions to maritime history.
