The Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics was founded in 1932 by economist Alfred Cowles with the motto 'Theory and Measurement', dedicated to linking economic theory to mathematics and statistics. The foundation's ultimate goal was to gain insight into economic policy through specific, probabilistic framework in estimating simultaneous equations to model an economy. Contributing economist Paul A. Samuelson was the first American to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for doing "... more than any other contemporary economist to raise the level of scientific analysis in economic theory".
