Rare original drawing for E.B. White's children's novel, The Trumpet of the Swan. Pencil drawing of a swan standing on her nest looking at her clutch of eggs with translucent paper attached to the upper portion of the larger sheet over the drawing. Two inscriptions are written beneath in pencil: one in an unknown hand, "To go with Sam Beaver's diary entry, Chapt. I," and one in the hand of Ed Frascino, "Original Drawing by E.B. White published in "The Trumpet of the Swan'--EF." Ed Frascino is an American illustrator and cartoonist best known for illustrating several of E. B. White’s later works, including The Trumpet of the Swan, and for his humorous and expressive drawings featured in The New Yorker. The piece measures 9.5 inches by 11 inches. Accompanied by an autograph letter signed by Ed Frascino to Mr. Jeffrey C. Adams of Belvedere, California, "20 Jan. '95 Dear Jeff: Herewith the drawing by E.B. White for 'The Trumpet of the Swan.' It didn't seem right to offer it for sale along with my illustrations for the book, and, as it is unsigned, how would one price it? As a collector of Mr. White's work I imagine you will get the most pleasure out of having it. Best wishes, Ed Frascino." In near fine condition. The piece measures 7.5 inches by 11 inches.
“E.B. White’s last book for children, published almost 20 years after Charlotte’s Web, is the unlikely tale of Louis, a mute trumpeter swan (named for Louis Armstrong), who compensates for his muteness by becoming a virtuoso player of a real trumpet… As he had done with Charlotte’s Web, [White] researched his material thoroughly— making inquiries about everything from the annual migration of trumpeter swans to the workings of the swan boats in the Boston Public Garden— and he wrote the text with the same scrupulous attention to detail… E.B. White has won a place in the hearts of the young forever” (Silvey, 677-78).
