Signed limited edition of this exploration and celebration of Spain's Golden Age. Octavo, original publisher’s cloth with gilt titles to the spine, top edge gilt, silk ribbon bound in. One of 175 numbered copies, this is number 18. Boldly signed by W. Somerset Maugham on the limitations page. In near fine condition, bookplate to the rear pastedown of Craig V. Showalter. Housed in the original black board slipcase.
W. Somerset Maugham’s Don Fernando is a richly discursive tribute to Spain’s Golden Age, blending travel writing with cultural reflection rather than following a conventional, plot-driven narrative. Part travelogue, part series of meditations, the book explores Spain’s art, literature, and national character through Maugham’s keen observations on landscapes, food, and everyday life, alongside portraits of towering figures such as Cervantes, Velázquez, El Greco, and the mystic St. Teresa. Moving between history, anecdote, and personal insight, Maugham considers themes like religious devotion, mysticism, and enduring cultural archetypes, ultimately revealing his deep admiration for Spain’s creative spirit and lasting influence.
