Octavo, original publisher's cloth, facsimile letter frontispiece, engraved folding facsimile of the "newly-discovered map of Marquette." Field 1391; Sabin 80002. Provenance: bookplate of Mississippi River collector and bibliographer Dudley Bell Priester (1923-2017) to the pastedown. In very good condition. Uncommon in this condition.
"Beside the valuable relations, which afford us the first accounts of the Indian tribes which inhabited the vast track of the territory, from the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi, Mr. Shea has added notes, biographical sketches, and bibliographical accounts of works upon aboriginal history, which are scarcely to be overestimated. All the relations, narratives, and notes in this volume are filled with the most interesting details of the Indians, at a period when many of them for the first time, beheld the white foreigners in the persons of the missionaries and explorers" (Field).
