Signed limited first edition of General Eisenhower's wartime memoirs. Thick octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, top edge gilt. One of 1426 numbered copies, this is number 748. Association copy, inscribed by Eisenhower on the limitation page, "To Perle Mesta with best wishes and affectionate regard from her devoted friend Ike Eisenhower.'' The recipient, Perle Mesta (1889–1975), was an American socialite, political hostess, and diplomat best known for her influential role in mid-twentieth-century Washington society. Celebrated as the “Hostess with the Mostes’,” she used her salons to bridge political divides and cultivate bipartisan connections, later serving as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg (1949–1953) under President Harry S. Truman, where her charisma and social acumen became hallmarks of American soft diplomacy in the early Cold War era. Renowned for her ability to unite figures across the political spectrum, Mesta maintained friendships with leaders of both parties, including President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was a frequent guest at her celebrated Washington gatherings. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the spine.
Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. For many historians, his memoirs of this eventful period of U.S. history have become the single most important record of the war. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned and lived it. Through his eyes, the enormous scope and drama of the war―strategy, battles, moments of fateful decision―become fully illuminated in all their fateful glory. "Eisenhower gives the reader true insight into the most difficult part of a commander's life" (New York Times).
