Codex: The City of Culture of Galicia (Monacelli Press, 2005) is Peter Eisenman’s extended, project-specific argument for architecture as a generative “text”—a coded system in which form, site, and program are produced through operations rather than composed as static objects. Centered on Eisenman’s competition-winning scheme for Santiago de Compostela’s Cidade da Cultura, the book frames the complex as a cultural acropolis of museums, libraries, and auditoria distributed across Monte Gaiás and organized as six interrelated volumes that read as a continuous, manipulated terrain. Eisenman’s key move—excavating and reconstituting the hilltop so that building becomes “artificial topography”—positions the project within late-twentieth-century debates on deconstructive form, figure/ground ambiguity, and the politics of monumental public culture; while also foregrounding the practical problem of reconciling a sensitive landscape with an assertively new image.
