Rare complete original issue of the April 30, 1910 issue of The Outlook magazine containing the first American appearance of Theodore Roosevelt's famous "Man in the Arena" speech, delivered at the Sorbonne on April 23, 1910, under the formal title Citizenship in a Republic. Octavo, original wrappers. In near fine condition. Complete copies of this issue are notably scarce, particularly in original wrappers, as such ephemeral publications were seldom preserved with care.
Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” speech, formally titled Citizenship in a Republic and delivered at the Sorbonne in 1910, remains one of the most enduring expressions of democratic idealism and personal responsibility in American political thought. In it, Roosevelt contrasts the passive critic with the individual who actively engages in the struggles of public and private life, famously asserting that “the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.” The speech emphasizes courage, perseverance, and the moral value of effort over detached judgment, reflecting Roosevelt’s broader philosophy of vigorous citizenship. Its rhetoric continues to resonate as a call to action, celebrating those who dare to strive, fail, and ultimately contribute to the advancement of society.
