First Edition of Churchill at War; Inscribed by Martin Gilbert to American Media Historian Christopher H. Sterling
First edition of this photographic biography documenting Winston Churchill’s leadership during WWII. Square quarto, original publisher's cloth, pictorial endpapers, title page vignette, profusely illustrated with black and white photographs of Churchill. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, "To Chirs - with the author's warm regards and all good wishes Martin Washington D.C. 30th April 2004." The recipient, Christopher H. Sterling (1943-2023), was the distinguished Professor of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University and one of the foremost historians of American electronic media and telecommunications, maintained throughout his career a deep and abiding passion for Winston Churchill that went well beyond casual admiration. An avid book collector nearly all his life, Sterling developed a substantial collection on Sir Winston Churchill alongside his other collecting interests, and was a member of several Churchill Societies. He published articles on Churchill as one of his primary scholarly avocations, bringing to that subject the same bibliographic precision and archival instinct that defined his professional work in telecommunications history. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Accompanied by a letter from Abigail Cleaves of W.W. Norton & Company describing the book laid in. Picture credits to the Imperial War Museum.
Churchill at War: His "Finest Hour" in Photographs 1940–1945 (Carlton Books, 2003; W.W. Norton, 2004) is a lavishly illustrated photographic study produced in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum in London, written and captioned by Sir Martin Gilbert — the Oxford-trained historian who in 1968 was commissioned to complete the official multi-volume biography of Winston Churchill following the death of Randolph Churchill, and who was ultimately knighted in 1995 for his services to British history. Illustrated with 195 photographs hand-picked and captioned by Gilbert from the archives of the Imperial War Museum, the volume reveals the many sides of Winston Churchill across the five years of his wartime premiership — from addresses to Parliament and inspections of bomb-damaged cities to meetings with Roosevelt and Stalin, visits to troops in every theater of the war, and quieter moments that humanize one of the twentieth century's most studied public figures. Gilbert prefaces each year's photographs with a short narrative essay summarizing the period's events, bringing his unmatched biographical authority to bear on images that might otherwise speak only in the language of spectacle, grounding them instead in the strategic, political, and personal context that only Churchill's official biographer could supply.
