Rare 16th century printed seminary copy of Jerome's Latin Vulgate. Folio, bound in full elaborately blind-stamped vellum with remains of iron clasps, all edges red, finely printed in gothic letter, title printed in red and black within woodcut borders, numerous woodcuts and woodcut initials, title and a few woodcuts hand-colored. With a Seminary library catalog card laid in which notes: Jerome completed his famous translation into Latin from the original Hebrew and Greek in 405 A.D. It is this version which the Council of Trent in 1546 declared to be the authoritative Roman Catholic version. This is the only one of the Seminary's Bibles which antedates the present familiar practice of division of the text into numbered verses, a procedure first applied to the Latin Bible in 1555. Invery good condition with fraying to page edges, worming throughout, boards detached. Rare.
Jerome completed his renowned translation of the Bible into Latin in 405 A.D., working directly from the original Hebrew and Greek texts. This monumental work, known as the Vulgate, became the foundational scriptural text for the Western Church. Over a millennium later, in 1546, the Council of Trent—convened in response to the Protestant Reformation—formally declared the Vulgate to be the authoritative Latin version of the Bible for the Roman Catholic Church.
