Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. In near fine condition.
Dubbed "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century", English philosopher John Stuart Mill contributed widely to social theory, political theory, and political economy. A member of the Liberal Party, Mill conceived of liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state and social control and was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by his predecessor Jeremy Bentham. The second Member of Parliament to call for women's suffrage, his best known works include A System of Logic (1843), On Liberty (1859), Utilitarianism (1863), and The Subjection of Women (1869).
