"We have parted with our freedom of design… and we have also tied our hands in the defence of the Narrow Seas”: First edition of Winston S. Churchill's Arms and the Covenant
First edition of this important collection of Churchill's speeches. Octavo, bound in three-quarters modern navy morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, frontispiece portrait of Churchill. In fine condition.
All but two of the speeches gathered in this volume were delivered by Winston Churchill in the House of Commons during the tense years preceding the Second World War. Compiled by his son, Randolph Churchill, and later revised by Churchill himself, these speeches exemplify the rhetorical mastery of a statesman who, as Langworth notes, devoted more time than any other modern orator to the preparation of his speeches" (Langworth, 190). "The finest (and most ominous) pre-war warning of Winston Churchill occurs on [its] penultimate page… Available in no other Churchill book… the last four paragraphs of that famous speech on 24 March 1938… summarize the theme of this volume, a precursor to the official theme of The Gathering Storm: 'How the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness, and good nature allowed the wicked to re-arm" (Langworth, 190).
