Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad is widely considered one of the greatest novelists of the English language. Writing near the peak of the British Empire, Conrad drew, among other things, on his native Poland's national experiences and on his own experiences in the French and British merchant navies, to create short stories and novels that reflect aspects of a European-dominated world—including imperialism and colonialism—and that profoundly explore the human psyche. An Outcast of the Islands (1896), Joseph Conrad’s second novel, explores themes of moral failure, colonial exploitation, and psychological isolation through the downfall of its central character, Peter Willems—a corrupt European trader who betrays those around him in pursuit of power and desire. Set in the Malay Archipelago, the novel reflects Conrad’s deep engagement with imperial landscapes and the ethical ambiguities of European presence in Southeast Asia.
