American Scenery (1840), authored by Nathaniel Parker Willis and illustrated by the British artist William Henry Bartlett, represents one of the most influential early attempts to define and disseminate a distinctly American landscape aesthetic. Combining Willis’s romantic prose with Bartlett’s finely detailed engravings, the work offered readers in both the United States and Europe an idealized vision of American natural beauty, from the Hudson River Valley to Niagara Falls.
