Rare 17th century engraved, hand-colored Pieter Van den Keere Map of the Americas. One page removed from John Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, with intricate topographical details. The map shows North and South America, the North, South and Pacifike Seas, parts of Africa, Spain and the "Oneknown World". Matted and framed with the recto of the page containing Speed's "Description of America" revealed on the back of the piece. In near fine condition. The entire piece measures 12 inches by 10 inches. Uncommon.
Flemish engraver, publisher and globe maker Pieter van den Keere worked for the majority of his career in England and the Dutch Republic. The son of engraver Hendrik van den Keere, van den Keere received training as an engraver in London from his brother-in-law Jodocus Hondius, who later published several of his maps. Many of van den Keere's miniature maps appeared in John Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World of 1646, the first world atlas produced by an Englishman, including the present map of the Americas.
