H. C. R. Becher’s 'A Trip to Mexico' is a distinctive nineteenth-century travel narrative that combines epistolary structure with early documentary photography to capture Mexico’s cultural and geographic diversity for an English readership. Written as a series of letters dispatched from various points along Becher’s journey, the text offers descriptive accounts of landscapes, archaeological sites, and urban life, while the accompanying original photographs—many taken directly from life—provide visual documentation of railways, volcanic terrains, Aztec monuments, pyramids, palaces, and the environs of Mexico City and Guadalupe.
