First Edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author to W. Willard Wirtz and his wife, "For Bill and Jane who served the / President so well with much love from a comrade of many years Arthur". William Willard Wirtz was the Secretary of Labor for the last year of President Kennedy's administration and during President Lyndon Johnson 's administration and a speech writer/advisor for Adlai Stevenson during his presidential campaigns. Wirtz was the last surviving member of Kennedy Cabinet. Arthur Schlesinger was a confidant and part of the inner circle of President Kennedy. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. A very nice association copy.
The noted historian Schlesinger's name is inseparable from the president's administration he so influenced. Schlesinger role as former college-attendee and later speechwriter to Kennedy served to cast the Kennedy White House years more as America's Camelot. "From The Age of Jackson to The Age of Roosevelt to the two Kennedy biographies (which could as easily have been called 'The Age of the Kennedys'), Schlesinger can be seen to have written a gapped history of 150 years of 'triumphant liberalism'" (Boston Globe). Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, this is the classic study of the presidency of John F. Kennedy as told by a master historian who had the advantage of personally witnessing the great and tragic events of which he writes. "Of all the Kennedy books . . . this is the best." (Time).
