The French Revolutionary Wars (1792–1802) were a series of conflicts sparked by the French Revolution, in which Revolutionary France fought against coalitions of European monarchies determined to halt the spread of republican ideals. They encompassed campaigns across continental Europe, from the Low Countries and Italy to Egypt, and witnessed both the radicalization of French politics at home and the rise of military leaders such as Napoleon Bonaparte. The wars not only transformed the political map of Europe but also exported revolutionary principles—citizenship, nationalism, and secular governance—beyond France’s borders, leaving a lasting imprint on nineteenth-century international relations and state formation.
