"These woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep": First Edition of New Hampshire; Inscribed by Robert Frost to George D. Olds
First edition, first printing of Robert Frost's first Pulitzer Prize-winning collection. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated with woodcuts by J.J. Lankes. Association copy, inscribed by the author, "For George Olds from his faithful follower Robert Frost." The recipient, George D. Olds, was a member of a prominent New York family with a legacy of philanthropy and land stewardship. His sister, Margaret Olds Strahl (1917–1994), is documented in connection with Robert Frost through multiple presentation copies of his works inscribed both to her and to her brother, several of which are preserved in the collections of Amherst College, where Frost maintained a long academic affiliation. These inscriptions suggest that Margaret Olds Strahl was part of Frost’s extended social circle, as an admirer and patron within the educated Northeastern milieu in which Frost moved. While no formal collaboration or correspondence is widely documented, the multiple signed volumes indicate a continuing acquaintance and a level of familiarity beyond a single presentation, situating the Olds family within the network of individuals who engaged directly with Frost during his lifetime. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. An exceptional association.
Robert Frost's collection of poems is a creative glance into quintessential rural New England life. The author spent his life in the area, and his writing reflects a passionate appreciation. The collections include the much lauded "Fire and Ice," "Nothing Gold Can Stay," and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," and the illustrations for the collection were drawn by J.J. Lankes. In 1923, these poems won Frost the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
