The Lovely Bones (2002) is the debut novel of American author Alice Sebold, narrated from the afterlife by fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon, who watches from her personal heaven as her family, friends, and community struggle to cope with the aftermath of her murder in suburban Pennsylvania in the early 1970s. Sebold's handling of grief, violence, and the persistence of love across the barrier of death struck an immediate and powerful chord with readers: the novel spent multiple weeks at the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, and remained on that list for more than a year, selling nearly three million copies worldwide. The book was honored with the American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award for Adult Fiction in 2003 and the Bram Stoker Award for First Novel in 2002. The novel's cultural reach extended well beyond the page: a 2009 film adaptation directed by Peter Jackson — who personally purchased the rights — starred Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Saoirse Ronan, and Stanley Tucci, with Tucci earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and Ronan earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress for their performances.
