George Rawlinson's History of Herodotus; Finely Bound by Zaehnsdorf
Finely bound example of Rawlinson's significant translation of Herodotus’ Histories. Octavo, four volumes bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards by Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, with maps and illustrations. Fourth edition. In near fine condition. A very nice set.
Rawlinson’s History of Herodotus, first published between 1858 and 1860 in four volumes, represented a significant moment in the Victorian reception of classical antiquity, combining translation with an extensive scholarly apparatus that reflected contemporary advances in historical and philological research. Rawlinson’s work integrated detailed notes, appendices, and geographical commentary, drawing upon emerging discoveries in Egyptology and Assyriology to contextualize Herodotus’ narrative within a broader Near Eastern framework. While the translation itself adhered to the formal and sometimes archaic conventions of Victorian prose, its enduring importance lay in its attempt to reconcile classical Greek historiography with newly available archaeological evidence.
