Scarce first separate American edition of Cervantes' classic novel. Duodecimo, four volumes bound in full contemporary mottled calf with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the spines. Smollett's English translation was first published in America in Philadelphia in John Conrad & Co.'s Select Novels series in 1803 (Vols. X-XIII), this is the first separate edition published in America. In good condition, lacking the majority of the spine label to Vol. I., spine cap perished on first and second volumes, small contemporary inscription of the Lord's Prayer to the front pastedown of first volume, ownership inscription to the front free endpapers of Vol. I and IV, lacking rear free endpaper in fourth volume.
