"Long Before I was born, even before he met and married my mother, Father Had it all worked out in his mind. I was going to be a musician": First Edition of Forbidden Childhood; Signed by Ruth Slenczynska
First edition of Slenczynska's memoir. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Book and author luncheon Waldorf Astoria Ruth Slenczynska Feb. 17, 1958." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Andy Warhol and Jack Wolfgang Beck. Photography by James J. Kriegsmann.
Ruth Slenczynska's father decided she was a musical prodigy even before her birth. Beginning at age three she was forced to practice the piano without rest. At age four, she began studies in Europe and later studied with Artur Schnabel, Egon Petri, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Forbidden Childhood is a frank and intimate account of a child prodigy's experience and struggle to escape the hold of tyrannical parenting.
