Six months into his first tenure as Prime Minister, Churchill had seen the Battle of the Atlantic, the fall of France, evacuation at Dunkirk, and the Battle of Britain. France had surrendered to Nazi Germany and Hitler had begun a massive, sustained aerial assault across the English Channel. In this speech, delivered in the House of Commons on November 5, 1940, Churchill reported on the massive losses to life and property sustained by the British and uttered in conclusion, “We will do our best. That is all I can say.”
