First edition of Langston Hughes' treasury of stories, poems, and essays by African writers. Octavo, original half-cloth, cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front pastedown and front free endpaper in the year of publication, "Especially for Dr. and Mrs. T. O. Johnson ~ with friendly regards ever ~ Langston Hughes New York July 24, 1960." The recipients later donated the book to the Community Church of New York with a commemorative bookplate. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Franz Hess.
Over six years in preparation, An African Treasury paints a lively, moving, and authentic portrait of Africa and its native voice. "What white writers think of the once 'Dark Continent' we long have known," writes Hughes in his introduction, "These pages tell what black writers think." The collection includes articles, essays, stories, and poetry by Tom Mboya, Marion Morel, Abioseh Nivol, Simon Pederek and Wole Soyinka in addition to Hottentot and Efik Folk Tales.
