Henry Graham Greene was an English writer and journalist regarded by many as one of the leading novelists of the 20th century. Combining literary acclaim with widespread popularity, Greene acquired a reputation early in his lifetime as a major writer, both of serious Catholic novels and of thrillers. He published his first novel, 'The Man Within,' in 1929, about Francis Andrews, a reluctant smuggler who betrays his colleagues, which enabled Greene to work full-time as a novelist. The book was later adapted in 1947 into a film by the same name, starring Ronald Shiner, Michael Redgrave as the smuggling captain Carlyon and Richard Attenborough as the protagonist Francis Andrews.
