First edition of Linnaeus’s inaugural oration at Uppsala. Octavo, written in Latin, bound in half morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and elaborate tooling to the spine in five compartments within raised bands, top edge marbled, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Rare with only a handful of copies appearing at auction since 1950.

This is Linnaeus’s inaugural lecture (oratio inauguralis) delivered when he formally assumed his post as Professor of Medicine at Uppsala University in 1741 — one of the most pivotal moments in his academic career. In this oration, titled “Oratio qua Peregrinationum intra Patriam asseritur necessitas” (“On the Necessity of Travels within One’s Own Country”), Linnaeus argued that naturalists and scientists should study and explore their own homeland with the same curiosity and dedication that others applied to distant, exotic lands.
