Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778), also known as Carolus Linnaeus or Carl von Linné, was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist whose systematic classification of living organisms laid the foundations of modern taxonomy. His most influential work, Systema Naturae (first published in 1735), introduced the binomial nomenclature system—assigning every species a two-part Latin name—which remains the universal standard in biological classification.
