The term Apocrypha refers to a collection of ancient Jewish writings that were composed between the third century BCE and the first century CE and are included in some versions of the Old Testament, particularly in the Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate, but not in the Hebrew Bible. These texts, which include works such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, and 1 and 2 Maccabees, provide valuable insights into the religious, cultural, and political life of Jews in the Second Temple period. While considered canonical by the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, they are generally regarded as non-canonical or “deuterocanonical” by most Protestant denominations, reflecting long-standing debates over scriptural authority.
