Sir John Ernest Neale (1890–1975) was one of the most influential Tudor historians of the twentieth century, best known for his groundbreaking studies on Elizabethan politics and the workings of Parliament. His works, including Elizabeth I and Her Parliaments (1953–1957) and Essays in Elizabethan History (1958), established what became known as the “Neale thesis,” which emphasized the significance of parliamentary opposition and the emergence of a “Puritan choir” in shaping Elizabethan governance. 'Essays in Elizabethan History' builds on his earlier studies of Elizabeth I and the Elizabethan Parliaments, using these essays to deepen his argument that the Tudor regime was characterized by a delicate balance between royal authority and parliamentary influence. His work emphasizes the personalities, factions, and political maneuverings of the Elizabethan court, shaping mid-twentieth-century understandings of Tudor governance.
