George Farquhar (1677–1707) was an influential Irish dramatist whose work marked a transition from the libertine tone of Restoration comedy to the more sentimental and morally conscious drama of the early eighteenth century. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and later joining the London stage, Farquhar became known for his witty dialogue, lively characters, and socially astute comedies, bringing a renewed energy and moral complexity to the genre of Restoration comedy. His best-known plays, The Recruiting Officer and The Beaux’ Stratagem, combine satire with a sympathetic portrayal of human frailty, social mobility and military life, often informed by his own experiences as an army officer.
