Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco by Morrell with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, title page vignette, with color illustrations throughout. In near fine condition. Introduction by Pierre Berton. Illustrations by Henry Varnum Poor. Poor, though best known as a painter and ceramicist, also made significant contributions as an illustrator, bringing a distinctive blend of modernist aesthetics and expressive line work to early 20th-century American book illustration. He later became known for his large-scale public murals, including commissions for the Department of Justice and the Library of Congress during the New Deal era.
The Call of the Wild is "one of the first American novels to examine the quest of the pioneering individual who breaks away from the sheltered environment of civilization and is romantically compelled to find freedom in nature.
