Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) was a pivotal figure in early 20th-century European literature, whose poetry is renowned for its lyrical intensity, philosophical depth, and spiritual introspection. Writing primarily in German, Rilke explored themes of existential solitude, the transformative power of art, and the presence of the divine in everyday life, most notably in works such as The Duino Elegies and The Sonnets to Orpheus. His distinctive poetic voice—marked by fluid imagery and metaphysical inquiry—helped shape modernist sensibilities and continues to exert a profound influence on contemporary poetry and thought.
