The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter, attributed to Ambrose Bierce and published in 1892, is a gothic novella that intertwines themes of piety, guilt, and forbidden love within a medieval Bavarian setting. Based on a German tale and adapte by Bierce from the work of Adolf Danziger, the narrative follows a young monk whose spiritual ideals are tested by his growing affection for the hangman’s ostracized daughter. The story’s haunting atmosphere and moral ambiguity reflect Bierce’s fascination with the darker aspects of human nature and his skepticism toward religious institutions.
