Walter Savage Landor’s Imaginary Conversations is a landmark in Romantic-era prose that reflects both the author’s classical education and his distinct literary sensibility. Composed over several decades in the 19th century, the work presents a series of fictional dialogues between prominent historical, literary, and mythological figures, through which Landor explores enduring themes such as justice, power, beauty, and the human condition. Landor, a fiercely independent thinker and accomplished stylist, uses these imagined encounters to express his philosophical ideals and political skepticism, often embedding his own convictions within the voices of antiquity. As both a poet and prose writer, Landor was admired, and influenced, the next generation of literary reformers such as Charles Dickens and Robert Browning.
