Sophocles’ Antigone is a foundational work of Greek tragedy that dramatizes the conflict between individual moral duty and the authority of the state. The play centers on Antigone’s defiance of King Creon’s edict forbidding the burial of her brother Polyneices, an act she undertakes out of religious and familial obligation. Her resistance highlights the tension between divine law and human law, as well as the limitations of patriarchal and political power. Creon’s inflexible insistence on civic order ultimately leads to a series of personal and communal tragedies, exposing the destructive consequences of authoritarian rule and hubris.
