Joseph Skelton (1783–1871) was a British engraver and antiquarian whose work played an important role in the visual preservation of medieval and early modern material culture. 'Engraved Illustrations of Antient Arms and Armour' was produced during a period of heightened interest in chivalry and the material remains of the Middle Ages. Skelton’s work presents finely detailed engravings based on notable collections of arms and armour in Britain, including those at the Tower of London and various private holdings. The volume not only served as an important reference for antiquaries and collectors but also played a role in shaping nineteenth-century historical imagination by providing artists, writers, and early historians with accurate visual sources.
