Rare original complete theatrical program for Margaret Webster's 1943 Broadway production of Othello, starring Paul Robeson as Othello and Jose Ferrer as Iago. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers, illustrated with black and white photographs throughout. Boldly signed by Robeson below his full-length portrait on page three, "All the best, Paul Robeson." Additionally signed by Jose Ferrer beside his portrait on page twelve. In very good condition.
Paul Robeson’s portrayal of Othello stands as a landmark in both theatrical and cultural history, representing a powerful intersection of race, art, and politics. In 1943, Robeson became the first African American actor to play the role of Othello in a major production on Broadway since the 19th century, performing opposite an otherwise all-white cast. The production, directed by Margaret Webster and co-starring Uta Hagen and José Ferrer, ran for over 290 performances—a record for a Shakespeare play on Broadway at the time. Robeson’s performance was widely praised for its emotional depth, dignity, and commanding presence, challenging long-held racial prejudices in American theater.
