First edition of Frederic Remington's classic work. Octavo, bound in full morocco by Asprey with gilt titles and five raised gilt bands to the spine, gilt central cowboy motif to the front panel, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. Illustrated with engraving by Remington including tissue-guarded frontispiece. In fine condition. An exceptional presentation.
One of the most important chroniclers of the American West, Frederic Remington was “the most successful Western illustrator in the ‘Golden Age’ of illustration at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, so much so that the other Western artists such as Charles Russell and Charles Schreyvogel were known during Remington’s life as members of the ‘School of Remington” (Samuels, ix). His paintings and sculptures of cowboys, American Indians and the U.S. Cavalry are now the highlights of many major collections throughout the United States including the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg New York and National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
