Official NASA color print of the Apollo VIII liftoff. Glossy color lithograph of the liftoff of the Apollo VIII space mission from Cape Kennedy on December 21, 1968. Boldly signed in blue felt tip by Neil Armstrong. Official NASA picture number 1. In fine condition. The piece measures 8 inches by 10 inches.
The Apollo 8 mission (December 21–27, 1968) marked a decisive turning point in human spaceflight as the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit and travel to—and orbit—the Moon. Commanded by Frank Borman, with Jim Lovell as Command Module Pilot and William A. Anders as Lunar Module Pilot, Apollo 8 completed ten lunar orbits, providing critical navigational, operational, and psychological validation for subsequent landings. Its success demonstrated the feasibility of translunar flight and safe return, directly enabling the achievement of Apollo 11, when Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
