Picturesque California: The Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Slope, edited by John Muir and published in the late nineteenth century, is a monumental illustrated survey that combines natural history, landscape description, and visual artistry to celebrate the scenic grandeur of the American West. Featuring essays by Muir and other prominent writers alongside numerous engravings and photogravures, the work constructs a romantic and scientifically informed vision of Western geography—from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific Coast—at a moment when industrialization and expansion were rapidly altering these environments. Muir’s editorial framing emphasizes both the aesthetic and ecological significance of the region, aligning the volume with emerging conservationist thought and situating it within broader cultural efforts to define the American wilderness as a national heritage.
