James Punnett Peters’ Nippur; or, Explorations and Adventures on the Euphrates: The Narrative of the University of Pennsylvania Expedition to Babylonia in the Years 1888–1890 (1897) offers a detailed account of one of the earliest large-scale American archaeological missions to Mesopotamia. Written by the expedition’s director, the narrative documents both the logistical challenges of fieldwork—ranging from negotiations with local authorities to the hardships of travel—and the scholarly significance of excavating the ancient city of Nippur, a major religious and cultural center of Sumer. Peters combines travelogue elements with archaeological reportage, reflecting both the adventurous ethos of nineteenth-century exploration and the emerging professionalization of Near Eastern archaeology.
