G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". 'What I Saw in America' (1922) is a travelogue that combines observation, satire, and cultural critique to explore the values and contradictions of the United States in the early twentieth century. Written after Chesterton’s visit to America in 1921, the book juxtaposes his admiration for American vitality, democracy, and religious energy with sharp criticisms of its materialism, commercialization, and social inequalities.
