First edition of one of Handel's finest operas, a highly dramatic work whose taut plot resembles that of Fidelio. Quarto, contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, engraved illustrated title page, index with advertisement, printed list of subscribers. In good condition. Ownership inscription. Rare.
Born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, German, later British, composer George Frideric Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, with works such as Alexander's Feast, Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remaining steadfastly popular. Rodelinda was first performed at the King's Theatre, London, on 13 February 1725. It is generally regarded as one of Handel's finest operas and has seen numerous performances and revivals.
