Charles Knight's magnificently illustrated Imperial Shakspere. Folio, two volumes bound into four in full red morocco with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, elaborate gilt ruling and central gilt portrait vignette of Shakespeare to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, elaborately illustrated with full-page steel engravings after pictures by C.W. Cope, W.P Frith, C.R. Leslie, D. Maclise, E.M. Ward, and others including tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare engraved by R.A. Artlett from the Chandos Portrait. In very good condition.
Shakespearian critic Charles Knight spent over four decades compiling what he felt were the truest and most authentic illustrations of Shakespeare's plays; the resulting "Imperial Shakspere" proved immensely popular upon publication in late 19th century London.
