Quarto, original publisher's vellum, pictorially stamped in gilt with an image of the titular character, Rip Van Winkle, top edge gilt, original silk ribbon tie attached to the front panel, tissue-guarded color frontispiece of Rip Van Winkle tipped in, illustrated throughout with 49 tissue-guarded plates by Arthur Rackham all tipped in. One of two hundred copies printed on Whatman paper, this is number 56. In near fine condition. Housed in a clamshell case. An exceptional example.
One of the leading literary figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration, Arthur Rackham's work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolor, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. "Arthur Rackham’s fanciful imagination gave his illustrations instant recognition, and his dedication to illustration kept him in the public eye for 30 years" (Hodnett, 233).
