Claire Lee Chennault (1893–1958) was a U.S. military aviator best known for commanding the “Flying Tigers,” the American Volunteer Group that defended China against Japanese air power prior to the United States’ entry into World War II. A proponent of aggressive pursuit tactics and innovative air strategies, Chennault often clashed with traditional Army Air Corps doctrine, but his emphasis on mobility, surprise, and exploiting the weaknesses of enemy aircraft proved highly effective in combat. His leadership not only bolstered Chinese resistance but also provided a model for Allied air operations in the Pacific. After the war, Chennault continued to play a significant role in U.S.–China relations, advocating for support of Nationalist forces during the Chinese Civil War.
